X & LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable?

I can export PKG_PATH in ~/.profile, & I can see it after starting X.
If I export LD_LIBRARY_PATH in ~/.profile, I don't see it set once I
have started X.  I suspect X plays games with this environment variable
when it starts, but can someone provide some insight as to what is
really going on?  How do I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH & have it stick when
flipping in & out of console & X?
