ports - subpackage + flavor - what am I doing wrong?

I am having a problem installing the openLDAP-server subpackage (bdb
flavor). I need to build it from the ports tree because the bdb flavor
is not available as a package (despite what the long docs say).

issuing the commands
/usr/ports/databases/openldap:975 $ env SUBPACKAGE="-server"
FLAVOR="bdb"; make install

yields only this..
===>  Installing openldap-client-2.3.11p4 from
/usr/ports/packages/i386/all/openldap-client-2.3.11p4.tgz
openldap-client-2.3.11p4:
complete

and pkg_info confirms that only the client subpackage is installed.
$ make show=MULTI_PACKAGES
 returns -server, and
$ env SUBPACKAGE="-server"; make show=FLAVORS
returns bdb

Any clues gratefully accepted!
