coloring PS1 on SSH connection?

I'm connecting via ssh to a Sun Ultra 10 running OpenBSD 4.0 from an
Intel client running OpenBSD 3.9.  I color code the client's PS1 prompt
variable using standard ANSI escape codes, & I would like to do the same
with the ssh connection to the U10.  I would think this is trivial, but
to date I have been unable to get colored prompts at the client's side
on ssh connections.  I have cycled between setting TERM on the U10 as
"xterm", "xterm-color", "rxvt", along with adding COLORTERM=1 to no
avail.  
 
Any help would be appreciated.
