usb audio card question: no mixer?

Thanks.  Unfortunately, I don't think that will help.  Both xmix and
aumix, as I understand it, are interfaces to /dev/mixer;  the problem
is, the audio device doesn't get any mixer controls configured in the
first place when the driver loads:

uaudio0: audio rev 1.00, 0 mixer controls
audio1 at uaudio0

... and "mixerctl -a" shows nothing, nada, zip.  There's nothing
configured for /dev/mixer.

I think the problem is at a lower level, during driver initialization
& configuration?
