Are you sure you are running 4.2 stable?  Perhaps you are running 4.2 
release?  This bug was reported and presumably fixed in November 2007. 
See misc archives subject "nptd regression in 4.2"; when Henning said 
"the problem is the dns lookup that blocks the parent process."
