--As for the rest, it is mine.
If an update is absolutely required, you can often compile it yourself.
The ports/packages system is just configuration and patches to make sure
programs work well with the rest of the OpenBSD system. It is not the
required way to install things; it is only the _recommended_ way to install
things.
If you find you can adapt the port to handle a newer version, it may be
worth contacting the maintainer of the port. (Especially with a patch, if
needed...) Ports can get updated with the -stable branch, on occasion.
