WPA in 4.3 with ATH?

I second both suggestions.

Another possibility is the openssh based VPN. I have always had interest in
trying this technique but have never gotten around to it. Has anyone used
this before?

Looks like full VPN capabilities were added to openssh in version 4.3
according to
http://www.openssh.com/txt/release-4.3

you could upgrade to 4.4 ( or a -current snapshot), or use ipsec.
that'll keep you even more secure :)
